Dental Implant Frequently Asked Questions – Part 1

Dental implants are a fantastic, long lasting solution for men and women who are currently suffering with broken, damaged, faded or missing teeth. This treatment results in a naturally beautiful smile, but there are many steps involved in getting patients to this point. Because of this, it is recommended that patients find out all there is to know about dental implantation before undergoing treatment.

Review some of the most commonly asked dental implant questions.

What are dental implants?

Implants are titanium alloy posts designed to placement in the jawbone where they then act as a tooth's root. Dental implants effectively support crowns, fixed bridges or dentures. Titanium is a strong, lightweight material and is used specifically in implants due to its ability to bond with bone, creating long lasting support.

What are the advantages over more conventional forms of tooth replacement?

More traditional dental prosthetics such as crowns, bridges and dentures provide patients with adequate tooth replacement, but implants give patients stable, long-lasting support. Stabilized support allows patients to eat and speak with ease. In addition, due to the fact that implants do not rely on support from surrounding teeth, patients also experience an increase in overall oral health.

Is everyone a candidate for dental implants?

Patients are not automatically qualified for dental implants based solely on the fact that they have missing teeth. Specific criteria need to be looked at and met before a patient can be considered for implantation, including:

General oral health. A patients overall oral health, specifically the condition of their remaining teeth and gums, needs to be in good condition in order for dental implants to be successful. Gum disease, broken teeth or dental decay, if present, will need to be treated before implantation treatments can begin.

Oral health maintenance. Maintaining oral health after treatment is another concern. Success rate will depend on the patient's ability to keep their teeth and gums clean post treatment. A suggested cleaning schedule will be provided by your dentist, and he or she will advise you on how to care for your newly placed implants.

Quality and quantity of bone. Implant success extremely satisfied with the quantity and quality of bone present in the jaw. Without enough surrounding bone, implant placement can be difficult. If patients lack sufficient quality and quantity of bone, a variety of techniques can be used to increase bone quantity for successful implantation.

Is there an age limit on dental implants?

A precise age limit on dental implants is not an immediate factor because each individual differences when it comes to bone growth. During the procedure, implants are placed in the jawbone, so while age is not a factor, bone growth is. Children and some adolescents are not ideal candidates for treatment because their bones are still forming and growing. Additional bone growth in the implant area can compromise and implant-therefore your dentist will recommend that implants not be placed until bone growth is complete.

Are implants guaranteed? What is their success rate?

An implant can not be guaranteed, but this tooth replacement procedure has been extensively tested, and patients have experienced a 90 [95% success rate over 5 to 10 years. With that being said, implants have been known to last over 30 years. Maintenance may be required from time to time, but when patients follow post-implant recommendations, they can experience long-term success.

Will I experience any complications?

Like with any aesthetic or medical procedure, dental implant treatments do come with some risk, however these risks are quite rare and easily treatable. Implant failure and damage to surrounding teeth are the most common complications patients' experience, but with careful pre-treatment planning, risk is greatly minimized.

When implants fail immediately, this is most often because of the presence of infection at the implant site or due to an unfavorable bone pattern. When either of these complications occurs, if the site is left to heal for a period of time (most often a few months) the implant can be successfully reinserted. Patients may also experience implant failure after a few years of initial success. This most commonly occurs when too much stress has been placed on the implant, or when an insufficient number of implants was initially placed (most often occurs in patients trying to reduce cost). With appropriate treatments however, this risk can also be minimized.

A condition known as perimplantitis is another complication that can result when undergoing dental implantation. Similar to periodontitis (gum disease), this condition involves inflammation of the gums and progressive loss of bone at the implant site. This can be easily avoided through daily brushing, frequent implant cleaning and regularly scheduled dental visits.

Chin Implant Styles – Which One is Best For You?

Chin augmentation with the use of synthetic implants is a simple and very effective method to enhance the forward projection of the lower face. Placed through a small incision underneath the chin in a skin crease, the bone of the chin is easily accessible for implant positioning. While this concept for facial enhancement has been used for over 40 years and the operative technique has essentially retained the same, the shapes and sizes of chin implants however have changed dramatically.

Chin implants historically consist of a central augmentation style which resulted in increased projection of the chin button. This implant style only covered in width the most anterior portion of the chin. While this style is still available today, the explosion of chin implant options takes into account how one may want to change the external appearance of the lower jaw line and its impact on the overlying chin soft tissues as well.

Anatomical chin implants have extended side 'wings' from a central button that wrap around the chin better. This results in a potentially visible and obvious step-off from the implant to the bone and avoids an unnatural chin elongation that does not fit the jawline. There are numerous variations of this anatomical design concept that change the thickness of the implant in different places to help create and improve the external appearance of the chin. These include such styles as a square design for men (who want a more square chin) to pre-jowl styles to help smooth out the indentation of the marionette lines for women. (create a smoother jawline as the chin blends into the posterior jawline) There are even implants that have a preformed notch in the middle (or one can be cut into it) to help create a central chin dimple if one so desires.

The selection of chin implant style can be determined by a visual or photographic analysis of your chin and some computer imaging done to see what changes you consider helpful to your goals. The size of a chin implant, however, is best done by doing measurements on a good 1: 1 photograph or a lateral cephalometric x-ray in a side view. Since the soft tissues of the chin move pretty much 1: 1 on what the bone does underneath, one can fairly accurately predict what a certain thickness (size) of an implant will do in profile.

Changing the appearance of one's chin today has more options than in the past. No longer do you have to just leave it up to the surgeon's eye to determine what is best for you. As an Indianapolis chin surgeon, I prefer to use a combination of photographs and occasional x-rays to help plan the outcome of chin surgery. While even the best preoperative planning is no guarantee of results, the more thought and input you have from the patient beforehand, the more likely you will be aware of the patient's goals.

Dental Implant Procedure – A Useful Cosmetic Operation to Insure

People facing dental injuries or problems have various options of dental procedures that fit them. Dental procedures are for those who have lost one or more teeth in an accident, or who have poor dental health. The whole procedure of dental implantation has opened new choices for people wanting to maintain or preserve their dental health. It is always an advantage to know at least the basics of any procedure you want to have or are about to have. If you are curious as to how a dental implant procedure actually works, read on.

A trip to the dentist provides you with a clear picture of what predicament you are facing, and what needs to be done about it. Your dental history and overall general dental health will be investigated by the dentist. The procedure works when the dentist takes into account the condition of your jaws and jaw bone, the location of the affected teeth, and what overall provisions and steps need to be taken for the whole procedure to be effective.

If the jaw bone is healthy, the implant procedure begins. If it is otherwise, a grafting of the jaw bone needs to be done. Dental implants are either titanium or zirconium based. When the jaw bone is ready, suitably sized incision will be made into the gums. Under general anesthesia, the dental implant will be embedded into the jaw bone.

This is the first step of the two. Healing time takes place in about a few months for the jawbone and gum to heal. Upon the next scheduled visit to the cosmetic dentist, the next step of the dental implant procedure is undertaken. A post to hold the tooth resembling crown will be inserted in another incision in the gum. Resting time for healing might take another week or so.

The final step is the fixing of the crown. The dentist would have obtained an image likeness representing your teeth upon which the crown is custom made. This is fixed to the post as a final step to the whole dental implant procedure.

The whole dental implant procedure may take eight months until the final step. Selecting a qualified, reliable and affordable cosmetic dentist will make the effort worth you money and dental health.

All About The Same Day Dental Implant Procedure

Before, dental implant procedures lasted for several months and people had to wait for months for them to get dental implants supported fix teeth or denture. This is no longer the case. Nowadays you can get permanent implants in as little as one day.

Who should undertake the same day dental implants procedure?

Anyone can undertake the procedure. Whether you have lost one tooth, a few teeth, or all of your teeth you should undertake the procedure and the professional will give you a beautiful smile in just a few hours.

The cool thing about the procedure is that the implant supported teeth do not interfere with your stomatognathic system. This means they do not interfere with your jaw joints, nerves, and muscles. Since you will be replacing your teeth permanently, you do not have to worry about your teeth coming off now and then.

As you know, when you lose teeth you lose your facial features. By replacing the missing teeth and lost gum you restore the support of your facial structures that gives you a youthful appearance. You are also able to eat the food you would not have ateen without teeth. These teeth are as good as the other types of teeth and function just like real teeth. You also keep them the same way you maintain your real teeth-by regular hygiene practices such as Dental Water Jet teeth cleaner and brushing.

How the same day dental implants work

If you are interested in the implants you should visit your local dental clinic and the dentist will analyze your situation and come up with a plan on how to fix the problem. The dentist goes ahead and designs your new set of teeth using the 3D scan and plan pathway. Once the design is complete, the doctor installs the implants on your jaw bone.

Depending on your clinical case, the dentist will place 4, 5 or even 6 implants on your jaw. The technology takes advantage of the existing bone; therefore, if you have scarce bones in your teeth you do not have to go bone grafting and sinus lifts. The implant dentist will place the implants in your pterygoid bone which means that the new teeth are more stable so giving you a great service for a long time. The implants are made from titanium which fuses with the bone through osseointegration. This stabilizes the new implants further. After the dentist has inserted the implants then put abutment, he attaches the fixed bridges to the abutment and you can use your new teeth just like you would use your regular teeth.

Success of the same day dental implant procedure

The success of the procedure depends on the dentist who undertakes it. This is why it's important for you to take your time to research and find a reputable and experienced professional to undertake the procedure. An experienced professional will strategically place the new teeth ensuring that they are strong and stable. The success will also be determined by how you take care of the new implants. You should avoid hard foods for the first 6-8 weeks. This is to give the implants time to integrate with the bones.

What Are the Differences Between Expensive Versus Affordable Dental Implant Care?

Dental consumers sometimes think that a dentist who charges more may provide the best dental implant care. This attitude stems from the often-held belief that if something is expensive it is automatically better. I do not believe this logic is applicable in choosing from what and where you will obtain dental implant care.

You, the potential dental consumer, should learn what exactly you are paying for, especially when you select pricy versus affordable dental implant care. You should also acquaint yourself with facts that truly identify successful outcomes of implant dental care.

Research on the output of using specific brands of dental implants today is largely done in university environments. Most of this research is funded by the companies, which dental implants are being tested, creating a situation with obvious potential for conflict of interest. The majorities of these studies are very short in duration, and exist primarily to promote the new implant products benefactor companies are exotic to bring to the dental marketplace as soon as possible. These types of "self-serving" studies are of little value except for marketing.

When examining the costs of placing and restoring dental implants, it becomes apparent that the final cost of dental implant care by the dentist to you is determined in a very subjective manner. By subjective, I mean that the out-of-pocket expense for a dentist to purchase a dental implant, place it, and restore it, is largely limited to:

1. What the dentist elects to pay for materials.
2. Elective costs for direct and indirect forms of advertising determined upon by the dentist.
3. The dollar amount (click to Exhibit 2) that the dentist wants to charge for his or her time to complete a dental-implant-related service. This fee is essentially based upon what the dentist wants to make as profit. It is a feeling, not necessarily based upon competitive factors.

Additionally, as much an advocate I am for marketing, I believe consumers should be aware of hidden costs and other slick sale strategies beyond "hype" when responding to any ads, bait-and-switch strategies are common in all industries, including the dental implant field. You must research who is treating you, their experience, and their outcomes.

I believe the prudent consumer seeking dental implant care needs to educate themselves to make good decisions in choosing who to take care of them, now as well as in the future. Educated shopping is consumers' responsibility to themselves.

The Dental Veneer Implant Procedure

A Dental veneer may also be known as a porcelain veneer or a porcelain laminate is a custom-made shell that is typically bonded to the front of the tooth surface to improve the appearance. It is usually made of thin porcelain or polymers and covers the tooth in order to change the color, size or shape of the tooth. In addition to changing the appearance, it can also be used to protect the surface of the tooth that has been damaged.

A porcelain dental veneer is more stain-resistant, and is also much closer in appearance to natural teeth than those made from resins, which are typically thinner and require less work before placement. Your dentist will help you to determine the best type of veneer for your situation.

You can a dental veneer for a solution in a number of different cases that include:

• Where the tooth surface has become worn or discolored
• Teeth with a large amount of filling may become unsightly and can be covered with a porcelain veneer.
• Teeth that are worn down, broken or chipped can be resurfaced with porcelain dental laminates.
• Gaps in between teeth or teeth that are misaligned can be filled with veneers.

It usually takes at least 3 trips to the dentist to obtain a dental veneer. The first trip will be for a consultation, and subsequent trips will involve custom making and bonding of the veneer. During the initial consultation, your dentist may recommend or ask about your need for wanting a veneer. She will explain the procedure, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages.

The procedure may also involve taking X-rays of the teeth, along with dental impressions of both your lower and upper jaw. In order to prepare for the veneer, a small amount of enamel will be removed from the tooth surface. The enamel will be used by the dental, lab, in creating your veneer.

Before the veneer is bonded to the tooth surface, your dentist, will ensure a proper fit by trimming and shaping the veneer, until it matches the tooth as close as possible. The tooth will be polished and etched to ensure a good bonding surface. The shade of the veneer can also be adjusted with right color of the dental cement.

When the veneer is properly positioned, light of a special wavelength is applied to activate curing of the cement. After the veneer is bonded to the tooth surface, the final step will involve clearing away the excess cement and making sure your bite is properly aligned.

You may be asked to return for a follow-up visit, to ensure that everything is OK. It may not take a very long period to get used to the veneer, and you may even forget that they have been placed on your teeth. Periodic dental visits can ensure that the veneer is still in place, and remains firmly bonded to the tooth.

Although they may not be natural, your veneers can and should be treated like regular natural tooth enamel, and should be brushed and cleaned regularly.
