Elements of Cosmetic Dentistry and Smile Enhancement

People used to think of cosmetic dentistry only as the procedures to enhance the teeth. However, your smile includes the teeth in the foreground, the gum in the background, and the lips that frame it all. Therefore, modern cosmetic dentistry procedures now include enhancement of the teeth and gum through cosmetic dental procedures, and enhancement of the lips through facial esthetic procedures.

What treatments are involved in enhancing a smile

  • Color enhancement with teeth whitening
  • Restorative treatment such as veneers & crowns
  • Cosmetic orthodontic treatment
  • Cosmetic gum surgery
  • Teeth replacement
  • Facial esthetic treatment such as lip augmentation with fillers and Botox

Cosmetic dentistry can enhancement tooth color, shape, or size. This can be achieved by teeth whitening or porcelain restorations. Teeth whitening can be done at home with tray material or strips that gradually lighten the teeth over a period of seven to tent teeth. Teeth whitening can also be done at the office, which takes about an hour. In-office teeth whitening provides better results, especially when dark or uneven colors are involved. Dramatic color changes may require either veneers or crowns. Ceramic restorations mask dark teeth colors and can be fabricated to be very bright. Veneers only cover the front of the teeth while crowns encircle the teeth. New materials such as E-Max and Zirconia, can create very thin veneers with colors that are as bright as the patient desires. Veneers and crowns can also correct teeth size or form and can close gaps between teeth.

Crocked teeth can now be straightened in few months with modern orthodontic treatment. Advances in brackets and wire technology allow amazing results that can be achieved in as little as 6 months. Orthodontic treatment can be done by traditional braces or by removable aligners such as Invisalign or ClearCorrect. Orthodontic treatment can level gum lines, correct protruded teeth, straighten crowded teeth or close gaps between teeth. It can also fix bite problems and improve lip support.

Cosmetic periodontal/gum surgery is an important part of cosmetic dentistry. The pink color of the gum forms the background of the smile. In addition to treating gum disease, gum surgery can correct short teeth to improve that proportions of teeth length to width. It can also level gum line to create a symmetric smile. Additionally, gum surgery is used for the treatment of gummy smile. A gummy smile shows excessive display of gum tissue when the patient smiles. A gummy smile can be corrected either by gum surgery, orthodontics, lip repositioning surgery, or Botox injections.

The lips and peri-oral areas play crucial roles in smile appearance. The lips frame the smile and enhance the entire picture. Lips that are disproportioned or asymmetric can be easily corrected with lip augmentation procedures. Lip augmentation is usually done with hyaluronic acid lip fillers. Lip fillers restore proper lip proportions, enlarge a thinning lip, and correct lip asymmetry. Fillers are also used to correct deep nasolabial folds and correct corners of the mouth. Additionally, thread lift is used to lift sagging peri-oral tissue and to give a more youthful look to the smile.

What to Look for in a Cosmetic Dentsist

One of the main pitfalls of cosmetic dentistry is choosing the wrong cosmetic dentist. As with plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures, a successful result is large dependent on the professional and in this case cosmetic dentist that you choose.

Most cosmetic dentistry is extremely visual with poor results being immediately noticeable to everyone you see. If you want to feel good in the knowledge that you look good then you need to make sure you are careful when selecting a cosmetic dentist to perform your cosmetic procedure.

As with most things it's easy to get ahead of yourself once you have decided to undergo a cosmetic procedure and just choose a dentist as quickly as possible without giving quality of work any consideration. Most people believe that a dentist is a dentist and that all dentists can perform cosmetic dentistry procedures to the same standard.

The truth is that mainstream family doctors are not trained in the field of cosmetic dentistry and not all cosmetic dentists are able to adequately perform every cosmetic procedure. A dentist who is good at dental implants or dental bridges may not be so experienced in dental bonding for example and a cosmetic dentist that specializes in teeth whitening may be good with whitening products and dental veneers but not so experienced in dental braces.

A good starting point is to get a recommendation for a cosmetic dentist from someone who has already had some cosmetic dentistry work done or, if you are friendly with your family dentist they may be able to point you in the direction of a cosmetic dentist who specialties in the cosmetic procedure that you are interested in having done.

If you can not get a good recommendation and you have to resort to yellow pages to find a cosmetic dentist in your area do not be afraid to check out a few.

Prices are something that you need to know but should not be the only basis for making your final decision as to which cosmetic dentist you choose.

Go for an initial consultation with more than one cosmetic dentist to get a good feel for the surroundings and what experience the dentist has. Discuss what you want to have done and listened to what the cosmetic dentist has to say and then compare the response with future and / or previous consultations.

Do not be afraid to ask to see before and after photos of previous clients smile makeovers (clarify that the pictures you are showing are the dentists own work) and make sure that any cosmetic dentist you choose has the relevant experience in the area of cosmetic dentistry that you require.

If you want a recommendation a good cosmetic dentist should not have a problem with arranging for you to speak to previous clients that have had similar treatment to what is being proposed for you.

At the end of the day cosmetic dentistry is an art. The work that a cosmetic dentist performs is one of the very first things that is seen by everyone you meet. If you want cosmetic dental work then the likelihood is that you care about how you look so take your time, do some ground work and only entrust your cosmetic dentistry procedure to the best cosmetic dentist you can find.

Cosmetic Dentistry Involves Many Processes

One of the most important types of dental services to use is cosmetic dentistry. This is a service where a dentist can work to improve the appearance of a person's smile. This can be done with a number of different functions and features in mind.

Some of the most common cosmetic dentistry practices involve the use of dental implants. These are implants that will replace missing teeth in an area. An implant can be planed in any point and can be shaped to look realistic. It will be easy to use an implant in any part of the mouth.

A crown can also be used in cosmetic dentistry. This relates to something that is placed over an existing tooth as a means of preventing the tooth to look more realistic. This would be used in cases where the tooth is no longer able to be supported through the use of a simple filling.

Composite bonding is another part of cosmetic dentistry that many people can take advantage of. This is a type of service where a person can have a discolored or chipped tooth fixed with a composite bond. A composite material that has an enamel appearance to it can be fixed over a tooth. This will be sculpted and hardened with the right materials. It will be handled as a means of supporting the appearance of the tooth and to see that it will not be bothered by any future problems.

Of course, the most commonly used type of service that can be handled is a teeth whitening service. This is where bleaching is used on the teeth to help get them to have a whiter appearance. Bleaching is often used because of how it will not reduce the levels of enamel on the teeth. This means that a person can have a whiter smile without worrying about any discolored areas.

All of these services can be handled no matter what a person's problem is. It can work in cases where a patient has been suffering from breaks or damages in the teeth. Even cases where a person lost a tooth a number of years ago can be handled. Anything that can occur can be fixed with the right cosmetic dentistry practice.

It helps to know that a dentist will be trained differently from others with cosmetic dentistry in mind. This comes from how these practices work with appearance in mind over different functions that relate to how functional the teeth that a person has can be.

These are all processes that relate to cosmetic dentistry that anyone can use. These processes will get any person to have a better looking smile without too much trouble or effort involved. They can work to get anyone's teeth to look as beautiful as possible.

Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry

Prosthodontics is a field of dentistry that specializes in replacing missing teeth with implants and prosthetics (false teeth). A prosthodontist is a dentist who has undergone a four-year ADA program to make him eligible for practice prosthodontics, in a sense that he has the skills to administrator a full mouth reconstruction in cases where the patient has lost all of his / her teeth due to an accident or because they are crooked and the patients wanted to replace them with dentures.

A prosthodontist also specializes in the diagnosis of teeth and mouth bite routines. A person with an awkward bite is premature to future mouth injuries in long-term impairments. The work of a prosthodontist is delicate and requires care and precision when creating false teeth. These false teeth or "dentures", as both dentists and patients prefer to call them, help the patient in facilitating a normal bite. Dentures are made up of preserved materials (for the teeth) and special plastic (for the gums), that give the dentures a natural and life-like look. Dentures need not only be for an entire set of teeth. Some dentures are used to replace even just two missing front teeth.

Prosthetics are expected to last for about 30 years or more, depending on the eating habits and hygiene of the patient. Dentures are supposedly to be brushed like normal teeth, to let them live longer and to reduce the bacteria and stain build-up.

Severe cases of dislocated teeth that have been caused by congenital defects and trauma from accidents require more specialized training when installing prosthetics intended to replace dislocated body parts other than the teeth. "Maxillofacial prosthetics" is a specialization requires an additional year of exclusive training in Maxillofacial Prosthetics. This sub-specialty of prosthodontics requires more precision, since other prosthetics are expected to be fabricated and installed on the gravely malformed face. This includes artificial eyes, nose and other facial prostheses. The prosthodontist will, more often than not, require aid from other medical and dental specialists to conceptualize the new prosthetics.

Maxillofacial prosthodontics is the most highly regarded specialization in the field of dentistry due to the complexity and longetivity of work required to restore severe cases of both dental and maxillofacial deformities.

Fixed prosthodontics is a cosmetic / esthetic way to replace missing or repair / concealed damaged teeth by the use of several dentistry methods, which include:

1. Crowns – or "caps" are used by dentists. This process involves getting a negative of the tooth to be covered by the crown. Afterwards, the tooth impressions are sent to a dental technician, in which the technician, in turn, fabricates the crown using different dental materials (depending on the agreement of the patient & dentist). Materials include: gold, silver, other metals and the cheaper porcelain.

2. Bridges – are false teeth installed on the gums, where the dentist attaches them to adjacent or neighboring teeth. "Abutment teeth" is the term used for the teeth where the dental bridges are attached to.

3. Inlay – is a filling made up of a solid substance (gold / porcelain) that is cemented in the drilled portion of the tooth. An inlay used for sever cases wherein a composite or amalgam filling is not enough to repair the damaged structure of the tooth.

4. Onlays – are used for teeth whose structure can not be repaired by inlays or dental composites alone. Onlays are used when the cusp or perimeter wall of the tooth is missing. Gold is the preferred substance used on onlays, since gold never tarnishes and is durable enough to withstand any future cracks and sills that may compromise the structure of the filled tooth.

5. Veneer – is a thin layer of decorative (composite or porcelain) material used to conceal cracks, malocclusions and gaps in between adjacent teeth. Veneers are bonded onto the surface of the teeth. People who suffer from healthy but slightly malocclused teeth are given the preferred option of getting veneers.

Cosmetic Dentistry Creates Smiles

Tooth decay is often the beginning of a downward spiral. This may seem like a minor problem, however, the loss of a single tooth can lead to a domino effect. Once that space has been created the other teeth begin to shift and lose their original position. This can alter the bite pattern and erode other teeth ensuring more decay to follow. The gums will also become loose as the teeth shift, thus creating an entryway for bacteria to grow. This can progress to a gum disease called gingivitis if not treated quickly.

Cosmetic dentistry has progressed faster than any other form of oral health care in the past twenty-five years. The dentist can create near perfect faces now by altering the height of the teeth, correcting abnormal chew patterns and correcting asymmetry improvements. The materials used have improved and the procedures are essentially painless. There are also many options to keep patients comfortable and safe.

The alternatives to problem solving have imploded to include every conceivable issue from straightening misaligned teeth to implanting new ones. A habit such as bruxism, which is when a person grinds their teeth while sleeping, damages the enamel on the teeth eliminating the natural protection. This crushing can also result in an uneven bite pattern encouraging tooth loss in the end.

If a tooth is not too decayed or fractured to be restored, an inlay or an onlay can be used. Sometimes a regular filling is not sufficient and a crown is not required. These fillings are the in between solutions, usually reserved for teeth in the back of the mouth to prevent a root canal or further damage from occurring.

When a root canal is necessary the infected part of the tooth is replaced with a rubber type filling and covered with a color-matching crown to prevent further problems. This allows the normal function to return and protects the other teeth from abnormal wear. They can last a very long time with proper care.

Porcelain veneers are a very thin covering used to alter the appearance of teeth. Using a bonding application, they can change the color, the shape and sometimes the size of teeth so they look completely natural. Cosmetic dentistry has perfected this process to repair chipped or discolored teeth.

Dental Implants last longer and are just as strong as natural teeth. They also look and function like natural teeth. The advantage implants have over bridges, dentures or even crowns is that the structure actually fuses to the jawbone. This prevails confusing moments like dentures popping out while laughing or speaking. The post also reduces further bone loss in the jaw. The post is there for life, however, if the crown is damaged it can be easily replaced.

Facial muscles actually submit to gravity, once the natural support structures are compromised it can result in drooping prompts or wrinkles. This sagging can be avoided and somewhat reversed with implants. Several teeth can be implanted simultaneously with a bridge.

Cosmetic dentistry is an effective way to attain a younger look while improving one's overall health. It is also a great way to maintain a healthy youthful look.

Cosmetic Dental Veneers

In our society, a great emphasis is placed on external appearance. There are many options available today to improve the external appearance. There are cosmetic options such as face lifts, implants and procedures to make the skin beautiful. However, the best way to improve your appearance is to get a beautiful smile. Cosmetic dental veneers are one such excellent option. Cosmetic dental veneers can correct a number of conditions of the teeth such as minor misalignments, chipped or broken teeth and discoloration.

Veneers are made from porcelain. Porcelain is very similar to enamel in both optical properties and durability. Natural teeth have a unique luster because the enamel layer covering them is slightly translucent. When light falls on teeth, it penetrates to the dentine layer and gets reflected by it. Similarly, porcelain is also slightly translucent and so veneers made from it do the same aesthetic appeal.

The procedure to install cosmetic dental veneers is very simple. The dentist will first remove a layer of enamel from the teeth. Then, temporary veneers are placed for the time being. Permanent veneers are manufactured in a dental laboratory to ensure that they match perfectly well with the neighboring teeth. Once they become available, the temporary veneers are removed and they are bonded in place.

One of the advantages of using cosmetic dental veneers is that they provide very effective results. If it is ensured that they blend with the surrounding teeth, they can be very difficult to distinguish.

Veneers can cost anywhere from $ 1000- $ 2000 per tooth. They are comparatively cost when compared to other recreational procedures. Costs will differ depending on the quality of the material. Machine made dental veneers are less cost when compared to those made manually. High-end veneers are made by hand to ensure that they perfectly match the surrounding teeth.

One of the major advantages of cosmetic veneers is that they provide effective results. They are an excellent way to correct dental flaws and get a beautiful smile. If you're interested in getting cosmetic veneers, contact your dentist to evaluate all the options that may be available to you.

Dental Implant Procedure – A Useful Cosmetic Operation to Insure

People facing dental injuries or problems have various options of dental procedures that fit them. Dental procedures are for those who have lost one or more teeth in an accident, or who have poor dental health. The whole procedure of dental implantation has opened new choices for people wanting to maintain or preserve their dental health. It is always an advantage to know at least the basics of any procedure you want to have or are about to have. If you are curious as to how a dental implant procedure actually works, read on.

A trip to the dentist provides you with a clear picture of what predicament you are facing, and what needs to be done about it. Your dental history and overall general dental health will be investigated by the dentist. The procedure works when the dentist takes into account the condition of your jaws and jaw bone, the location of the affected teeth, and what overall provisions and steps need to be taken for the whole procedure to be effective.

If the jaw bone is healthy, the implant procedure begins. If it is otherwise, a grafting of the jaw bone needs to be done. Dental implants are either titanium or zirconium based. When the jaw bone is ready, suitably sized incision will be made into the gums. Under general anesthesia, the dental implant will be embedded into the jaw bone.

This is the first step of the two. Healing time takes place in about a few months for the jawbone and gum to heal. Upon the next scheduled visit to the cosmetic dentist, the next step of the dental implant procedure is undertaken. A post to hold the tooth resembling crown will be inserted in another incision in the gum. Resting time for healing might take another week or so.

The final step is the fixing of the crown. The dentist would have obtained an image likeness representing your teeth upon which the crown is custom made. This is fixed to the post as a final step to the whole dental implant procedure.

The whole dental implant procedure may take eight months until the final step. Selecting a qualified, reliable and affordable cosmetic dentist will make the effort worth you money and dental health.
