The best place to start looking for a dentist is by asking friends and family. If you are new to the area you might want to ask co-workers who they would recommend for you. If you are looking for a dentist for children they will tell you the dentist that they took their children to and if they were satisfied. Depending on the type of work you are looking to have done determines the type of dentist you need. Most dentists specialize in certain areas of practice.
Look for a dentist who is close to home in case you need to make frequent visits. Often times you need to return for follow up visits and you do not want to have to travel far.
Never be afraid to ask how long a practice has been in operation before setting up an appointment. You need to make sure that the dentist has experience in the procedures that you require.
You should ask if the dentist will offer emergency care if you have a problem after hours or on the weekends.
Ask what the dentist charges for different procedures. If you have dental insurance you will want to know if they accept your insurance provider. If you do not have insurance or the dentist does not accept your insurance ask if they have payment plan options.
If you believe you are in need for a specialist dentist you should start with a General dentist first. They can evaluate and recommend you to the dentist that handles the type of procedure that you need. They work with specialist dentists and because clients return to their general dentist once the procedure is over they know who to recommend.
For those that hate the look of their smile, consider hiring a cosmetic dentist to step in and provide you with the care you need. These professionals will work with you, hand in hand, to get your smile looking as beautiful as you would like it to be. These professionals are able to talk to you, get an idea of what you believe your problems are and then offer a treatment option that's right for you. Many of those treatments are fast and effective. They can also make a dramatic difference in your ability to smile confidently again.
What Needs Done?
Each person's individual needs are very different from each other. You will likely need a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to determine what the best options for you are. The following are some examples of the most common procedures as well as how they could help you.
Whitening – It is one of the most popular types of treatments as it helps to brighten up the smile. These treatments can help to remove stains and discoloration from the teeth, creating a cleaner looking smile.
Shaping the enamel – Another solution for some is enamel shaping. Here, the provider uses a specialized method to remove or contour the same of the tooth to create a uniform look. It is especially helpful in situations where a tooth chip occurs.
Contouring – In this option, the dental care provider will reshape the tooth. It helps to repair situations including cracked, chipped or crooked teeth. It can also help some patients to avoid the use of braces to improve the smile without more invasive procedures.
Bonding – In some situations, they apply a product on the tooth's surface and then sculpt into the proper shape. This procedure is bonding. It can help to provide what looks like a new tooth in the mouth.
Veneers – In some situations, it is not possible to improve the current teeth and that is when procedures like veneers and implants can help. Here, the dentist can help hide or mask the teeth with the more destructive look. Veneers can be very effective in transforming a full smile in a fast and safe way.
For those that need care for oral health, you should contact your dental care provider. If your oral health is just fine but you need to improve the way your smile looks, contact a cosmetic dentist. He or she will work with you to determine what the best overall treatment option is for your needs and then determine what steps you should take to get the process started. Sometimes, more than one treatment option is best. In other cases, you may not need any treatment at all. During a consultation, you will learn about all of your options.[Top]
Having a sparkling smile and flawlessly fresh breath does not necessarily require stocking up on expensive commercial tooth whiteners and mouthwashes. In fact, the perfect oral hygiene preparations could be as close as your kitchen.
Some of these time-tested home remedies for tooth whitening and eliminating or preventing bad breath may not be for everyone – a few are notably short on the powerful minty flavor that most of us have come to associate with oral care products – but they're cost-effective, convenient, and they work.
Whiten Your Teeth
Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and plain old table salt, alone or in combination, are the backbone of the home tooth whitening arsenal. The simplest method is to simply dip your dampened toothbrush into baking soda and brush away; It's a safe, effective, and reliably fast way to get whiter teeth, although the taste leaves a lot to be desired. Follow up with a thorough peroxide rinse.
Mixing small amounts of baking soda and peroxide together will create a safe but strong whitening paste, and adding table salt will boost the power. Hint for the taste-sentitive: adding a tiny dab of toothpaste can make it tolerable.
A less powerful but undeniably more pleasant home tooth whitening technique is to rub the teeth with the inside of an orange or lemon peel. You can also make a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, or just squeeze a few drops of lemon juice onto a damp toothbrush dipped in baking soda. The taste is pretty intense but the mix actually works, and the chemical interaction, which makes the soda bubble and fizz, is fun.
Freshen Your Breath
Herbs are the original breath fresheners; for centuries thoughtful people have been discreetly chewing sprigs of fresh peppermint, parsley, spearmint, rosemary, basil, or tarragon after meals.
No fresh herbs on hand? Chewing fennel seeds can freshen the breath, but so can chewing an apple (which is not only a lot tastier, but a heck of a lot easier to come by in the course of a busy day). Actually most crispy or juicy fruits and vegetables do a surprprisingly good job of freshening the breath, and they also help prevent bad breath by acting as a kind of natural dental floss.
A strong solution of salt dissolved in water is a very effective mouthwash that will kill germs, which lead to bacterial problems that are often the cause of persistent bad breath.[Top]
When discussing dental insurance benefits, the cliche phrase "use it or lose it" really applies. Most dental insurances allow so many dollars per calendar year, and any dollars that are not utilized are lost. Additionally, the same philosophy applies to Flexible Spending or Health Saving Accounts, which force you to forfeit any left over money that you have paid for. Therefore, it is in your best interest to use these benefits each year before they expire and your money is lost.
Now that the end of the year is quickly approaching and there are only a few short months left to maximize your dental insurance benefits, I thought some tips to help educate patients would be valuable.
Before scheduling a dental appointment, call your insurance provider to find out the exact amount of your unspent dental benefits. Additionally, ask them what is covered with your policy. Typically, preventive procedures like cleanings, x-rays, and dental exams are covered, while cosmetic procedures, such as whitening and veneers, are not. Although, most dentists have staff members who check this for you, it is always nice walking into the office knowing what your out-of-pocket expenses may be.
When calling your dentist's office, be sure to not only schedule for yourself but also for eligible family members. However, do not forget that many dental offices may be seeing an influx of patients at this time, and the sooner you call, the more likely your dentist will be able to schedule your families' appointments.
Sometimes it is possible and beneficial to complete dental treatment in terms. This works nicely at the end of the year and the beginning of the next year. Depending on your individual needs, careful planning to maximize your benefits remaining for 2013, while completing the reminder of your treatment in early 2014 can provide you with more reimbursments than waiting to do it all the treatment next year. But, it is important to keep in mind that when insurance renews, there may be coverage changes, which includes changes in procedures covered and co = pays.
Saving money should not be your only motivation when visiting the dentist. Routine dental visits can detect early problems like gum disease and oral cancers. In addition it is important to remember that even a small cavity left untreated can become a bigger, more expensive dental problem in the future.
Be sure to use your dental insurance benefits before you lose them![Top]
A great smile is a big help in boosting your confidence in any situation you find yourself. Whether it be at the place where you work, social situations, or in your everyday travels, your self confidence is enhanced. It is not impossible to achieve a beautiful smile for yourself – just get in touch with a good orthodontist and the smile you are yearning for can become a reality, and it will be yours forever.
The orthodontist practices the type of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a condition termed as malocclusions. This is simply a condition where the teeth are misaligned when the mouth is closed. A orthodontist will have an extra two to three years of additional schooling after dental school to continue education in this field. Upon graduation from this branch of dentistry, they have mastered the procedures for managing and guiding the movement of teeth back into their desired positions in the jaw.
The Visit To The Orthodontist
When you make your first visit to the Orthodontist, you will have a thorough examination of your mouth and teeth in order to determine what your orthodontist needs are. Most likely x-rays will be taken and perhaps impressions will be made of the current state of the teeth in your mouth. The orthodontist will be able to explain to you in general terms, whether or not you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment, what the procedure would be, how long it would take to completion, and the general cost.
Treatment In The Early Stages
Most orthodontists advise parents to take their children to see an orthodontist at the earliest signs of orthodontic issues, or by the time they are seven years old. A younger child can achieve more progress with early treatment and the cost is less. If it is determined that early treatment is not necessary, the child can be monitored until treatment is necessary. The growth of the jaw and the facial bones can make a big difference in the type of treatment required.
Types Of Treatment
There a number of instances where treatment by an orthodontist is necessary. Overbites, underbites, and overjets are addressed here. Overcrowded teeth can also be fixed by an orthodontist, which cause problems when brushing and flossing, because of the high levels of bacteria that are left in the teeth by overcrowding. This can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Teeth that are protruding are prone to chipping, and openbites can cause speech problems.
The Duration of Treatment
Most treatments by orthodontists will take an extended period of time to accomplish the desired goals. After all, we are moving teeth while they are still attached to the jawbone, and this depends upon age, the severity of the condition, and the type of treatment that is needed. The commitment of the patient to the treatment procedure is the most important factor in achieving the desired outcome. Cooperation between the doctor and the patient is key to success.[Top]

The type of orthodontics braces that is best for someone varies depending on a number of factors. There are three main types available from an orthodontics dentist or orthodontist and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. The three main types are metal braces, clear ceramic braces and invisible "lingual" braces.
Orthodontics braces are well known for being able to straighten teeth that are either cooked or even crowed. They can even be used to help with a missing tooth. What is not as well known is that all three main types can provide help when a patients' bite or jaw is not aligned properly.
Braces are typically worn for about two years depending on the amount of corrections that need to take place. With all three main types a metal wire or elastic band goes through brackets which are bonded to the teeth. Since the braces are consistently correcting the position of the teeth regularly follow up visits are made to an orthodontics dentist or orthodontist in order for adjustments to be made. This ensures that the teeth are absolutely corrected in the desired fashion so the patient ends up with a straightened smile that lasts a lifetime.
Metal braces are considered to be the traditional type of braces. Quite simply, a metal wire is run through metal brackets that are attached to the teeth. This type works very well.
The major disadvantage with conventional metal braces that causes many people to decide on another type is the fact that they are the most visible type. Those people who believe they may feel somewhat self conscious while wearing metal braces often seriously consider one of the two other main options.
The major advantage to metal braces is that these are the least expensive type to wear. Those people who want to keep the cost down often seriously consider this type.
Ceramic braces are the second main type. These are made from materials that allow them to be close in color to that of the teeth themselves. This makes the brackets that are attached to the teeth much more difficult to see. For this reason ceramic braces are sometimes called clear braces.
The wire or elastic used with clear ceramic brackets can also be in a less noticeable, tooth colored shade.
Clear ceramic brackets are not especially fragile but because of the materials used they are certainly considered more likely to break than metal braces. This should not be a big concern for many people though. Those people involved in contact sports would be the type of people who would need to use extra caution when wearing this type.
Clear ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces and this may be a concern for some people.
The third main type of braces is lingual braces. This type is bonded to the inside or back side of the teeth instead of on the front side.
Since lingual braces can not be seen seen by others these are referred to as invisible braces. This is the major advantage with the lingual type.
The down side is that invisible lingual braces cost more than the metal or clear ceramic type.
When deciding on braces from an orthodontic dentist or orthodontist consider how visible they will be as well as the cost since these are the main issues people have.[Top]
